Jake

Jake by Michael Cargill

Below I will have a link to his website:

This book is one that I did enjoy, and I am glad to say received in the mail from the author himself. Now to get on more with the review itself, overall I really did enjoy the book, but one thing I would like to address is that the ending could be different. Not to spoil it for anyone but it does have major suicide and death influence in the story. I feel like more to raise awareness about it in today's world one that is not talked enough about.

As only I think for me Jake seems more like a starting draft for a more expansive book that could definitely grow, it has enough small plot holes that could be expanded on to improve the length and detail of the overall story. I think Michael did a great job of having the story come full circle in so few pages and actually make it seem like you had a bond with the characters.

I do think that the ending could have been tweaked a tad to address the topic of suicide (which does need to be discussed) but also have a that, to be honest, doesn't make you feel horrible for reading it and not being able to do anything to help or save the characters. I also think that Michael should expand the story over a longer period having Jake (the main character) grow more instead of having it seem like he grows up abnormally fast even though it only takes place in a year. Which could easily be solved by placing dates with months/days at the beginning of the chapters to tell the exact time it is taking place and what year so we have a better understanding of how old Jake is at that moment in the story.

I did enjoy Jake a lot, it definitely played with my heartstrings. I just believe that there is a lot of potential for the story to grow into a larger more plot complex story with extra value in expressing suicide/death.

  1. Good to hear you enjoyed the story.

You raise some interesting points about the timescale, etc.

As for writing a more expansive book that covers more of Jake's life... never say never! :)
