SIRENS - Book Review

SIRENS
by Joseph Knox

Sirens by Joseph Knox was a very interesting read for me, and very much out of my normal reading comfort zone. I am like any reading fanatic, finds books that they like really sticking with them, which can both be good and bad. Sometimes because of this, I will get stuck in a rut reading similar books by different authors with slightly different plots. Right now I have been especially into Historical Fiction as you can tell from my previous book reviews. So reading Sirens was a great switch up for me. Took me into a genre I would not have normally traversed before. This was a great read to mix things up from what I normally read an I am thankful I got the chance to experience something new that I would not have normally ever given the chance to read.

With this book, I'm not gonna lie the first few chapters were a tad slow and hard to understand. This because of examining whilst trying to piece all the background and present information together. One thing though was that the chapters were short so it made the slow part go by much faster than it would have if they were not like that. Once you got past the part that was slow the storyline really took off. There were plenty of parts that had me thinking what was going to come next, and plenty I was also trying to solve along with the main character Aidan.

Overall the book had many diverse topics in it ranging from drug use/ distribution with gangs to the gay community to suicide and sexual assault. I thought the book was a complicated but beautifully spun web of mystery and confusion. Happy and sad. Joyful and depressing. For me, this book touched all the heartstrings both good and bad, and the complexity of the storyline was immaculate I couldn't find a single flaw while I was reading it and piecing all the parts together. The best part was while you pieced it together and you would miss a minuscule detail and be off slightly on who you thought the person was that had done it. Fair warning when reading Sirens, you will hate, love and feel sorry for the characters in this book. Some you will hate more than others but come to realize you were wrong. Only to find out that the person you loved was the one you shouldn't have trusted to begin with.

I can't express enough my praises for Sirens it was an amazingly complex mystery novel that left you hanging all in the right places, it was dark and depressing when it needed to be making the feel of the story come to life before your eyes, it was light and hopeful as well showing you that a good thing can come from the bad, but that same event could annihilate you downward again 5 chapters later when you read on thinking things would get better for everyone.

The best part about Sirens was the ending, yes obviously the end of the book is always the best part because you finally know what has happened and can be happy, sad or both for what has happened. Yes, I was both but the was Joseph tied up those loose ends was not what one would have expected from a mystery thriller crime novel. Actually, it was the complete opposite and that was the reason why for me the end was the best part. Another praise I have is that he tied up some of the loose ends of certain things before others staggering the ends of each of the events he was in at different times. Unlike most books where they all come to a close with one event that involved everyone. For me, this is what separates a GREAT book from an OKAY one.

I thank Blogging for Books*** for letting me be able to read this book it was an eye-opening experience because it was out of my normal reading comfort zone. I also have to thank Joseph Knox for writing such a mesmerizing twisting tale that I would not have read if given a different chance.
